The
rocky ground, and the very few economical resources led the population of Evritania to
emigration. More than half of the people in the territory left their homes in search of a
better luck between 1940 and 1970. Later on however, and aiming to the exploitation of the
natural beauty and tourism potentialities, new roads have been constructed, and a lot of
hotels, motels and renting rooms have been built, following a plan co-funded EU.
The ski-centre of Velouchi is a major
attraction along with the healthy and cool climate during the summer. All public services,
banks, stores and a big hospital are available in Karpenissi, while the new tunnel that
joins Evritania with the rest of Greece, has put an end to the long isolation of the
territory
WHERE TO GO - WHAT
TO SEE
So,here you
are at last! Welcome to the beautiful city of Karpenissi.Get ready to enjoy an
enchanting natural beauty, which you would hardly meet anywhere else. Almost every
suggestion we are going to make is relating exactly to this virgin Nature and the
unspoiled beauty of the landscape.
If you are staying in town, you shouldn't miss the chance of
relaxing under the refreshing shadow of the old plane tree in the midst of a picturesque
square. There you can feel a special touch of calmness and the unimportance of time.
The
square is marble-coated with harmonious colours and semi-cyclic motives forming letters
that read out the names of the old municipalities of the area. Here also rests the statue
of Marcos Botsaris, a famous Greek hero. The newspaper "Panevritanean" founded
the statue at 1925
Just beside the Cathedral, opposite of
the Telephone Company (OTE) building is a memorial plaque indicating that here was the
Elementary Greek School during the German occupation. As we follow the way out to the
western exit of the town, we can see another bronze statue, dedicated to the hero
Katsantonis, a worrior that also gave his life to free his slaved country from the Turks.
You could also visit St. Dimitirios hill, just opposite the town. Tradition says that
thousands of years ago, it had been part of Mount Velouchi and it's likely that there was
an ancient castle on the top. The view from up there is fascinating as the whole town lies
before your very eyes.
Let us now, enjoy night in Karpenissi. Like most places in Greece,
here also, delight and dance are in first lines of night entertainment. Either you prefer
original Greek food, local pure wine and traditional music, or you are fans of modern
rythms, Karpenissi can cover all of your needs. Lovely summer bars sunk in the perfume of
basil and roses, willingly open their doors to welcome you.
Nevertheless, we believe that
nothing compares to the warm embrace of the fireplace, the musical cracking of the
fir-tree woods, along with the odoriferous burning tree sap. Friendly company and
disposition are just your share to enjoy a perfect evening in one of the many places in
town; an evening that is going to be an unforgettable memory, a treasure for the years to
come...
